Double rescue as lifeboat capsizes
Three people rescued from a yacht in difficulties off Spurn Head yesterday had to be rescued a second time when a lifeboat capsized.
The yacht Penn Player put out a Mayday call reporting they had gone aground, lost a rudder and had smoke coming from the engine The Humber RNLI Lifeboat was immediately launched and once on scene the smaller Y-class lifeboat went in to recover the 3 persons.
On returning to the offshore boat the smaller boat capsized - and the crew as well as the three yachtsmen were deposited in the water. Cleethorpes RNLI Inshore Lifeboat went to the area and everyone was safely recovered, said a spokesman for the Marine and Coastguard Agency.
Rescue Helicopter 128 from Leconfield was scrambled and airlifted two of the casualties, who were suffering from shock and hypothermia, to Grimsby Hospital. The Humber RNLI Lifeboat towed the yacht to Grimsby. Humber Coastguard watch manager Bev Allen said: “The fact that the yacht was able to provide a very concise Mayday call assisted in the rescue of those on board. This incident showed great team work with all of those involved.”
